The English All-Rounder was predicted to fetch a large amount at the auction.
Stokes was one of the seven marquee players who were rated at the highest base price at Rs.2 Crore. Stokes was sold for a whooping Rs. 14.5 Crore to the Pune based Rising Pune Super Giants.
The bid for the star all-rounder was started by the heavy-weights, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians. Eventually Delhi and Hyderabad joined in but none could stop the Supergiants from getting the most targeted player of this season’s auction.
Ben Stokes is the second most expensive player in the history of IPL with Yuvraj Singh at the helm, who was sold to RCB at 16 Crores in 2015.
The team owner, Sanjeev Goenka, had this to say about the buy- “He’s a complete player. He completes our squad. We’ve been lacking this genre of player. We have many heroes, but this is one hero we were lacking.
“We knew he was going to go expensive. We believe he’s going to be available for the first 14 games and right now we are focusing on the first 14 games. We are very happy. We pretty much knew we aren’t going to get him at a lesser.
“Everyone (including Steve Smith and Stephen Fleming) has been part of this decision”
